Do you think it is possible to save a heritage site with the power of just one person's voice? Today you will see for yourself that it is! Student architect Fedor Chernov is a wonderful confirmation of this. He shared with us the story of a saved merchant's shop in the city of Okhtyrka, which is part of the protected complex of a local monument - Merchant's Trading Houses of the Early 20th Century.

Okhtyrka of the early 20th century embodied the wealth and luxury of the merchant era. In its central part, merchant's shops and adjoining houses were spread out, the first floors of which were mainly occupied by shops with their own shop windows, and the second floors served as the owners' residences and storage areas for goods.

The merchant's shop, which is the main character of today's story, once probably belonged to the famous local families Kurylo or Bondarenko. In modern times, the building served for a long time as the headquarters of the "Firmovyi" store, the owners of which preserved the authentic appearance of the building. In 2022, the building was damaged by shelling in the Okhtyrka area, but the then tenants restored its original appearance and hired a street artist to decorate the facade with a black-and-white drawing instead of a sign, which did not cover or destroy the architectural elements.

Everything changed for the building in the fall of 2022, when it received new owners who did not seem to care much about its authenticity and architectural features. The owners hastily began installing metal structures for a curtain wall, which would hide the architectural and aesthetic features of the building. Moreover, such an “innovation” could result in the inevitable destruction of the facade.

The situation was critical, but our building found its hero. Architecture student Fedir Chernov could not stand idly by, watching this heritage object being devalued and destroyed. He began an active struggle to preserve the building. Not only did social networks become his "battlefield", he appealed to indifferent owners, tried to involve the architectural control service, wrote official appeals to the Sumy OVA and the Okhtyrka City Council, and even enlisted the help of journalist Andriy Mikheyev (Pravda TUT media). His persistence and mobilization of forces yielded results. In a short time, the metal structures were dismantled and the facade was restored.

Thus, the old merchant's shop became not only a witness to history, but also a living symbol of the fact that even one vote can have a great impact. The saved authentic architecture became a good example of responding to intentional damage to cultural heritage through pressure on entrepreneurs and local authorities using methods accessible to each of us - publications on social networks, letters of appeal, and cooperation with journalists. As a result, the historical building finally received a decent decoration and aesthetic appearance.
